How I Know My Inner Voice is Full of BS

You know that inner voice, the one that tries to bring you back down to reality all the time? I kind of hate it.

Chances are you’ve got one of these too, and it tells you things like:

  • You’re not good enough reach your dreams.
  • Who are you to think you should write a book?
  • There are so many people out there better than you, don’t even try.
  • You’re gonna fail this time, just like the last time you failed.
  • It’s only a matter of time until you’re exposed.

CAUGHT IN A LIE

Yesterday I was at the Catalyst One Day event here in Lancaster County and my inner voice started acting up. It was doing a great job of bringing me down too, until it made one huge mistake. That’s when I remembered how full of crap it is.

You see, Catalyst does everything with excellence, and as I watched the day unfold I started to think about the Conference I am in the middle of planning. Here’s what my inner voice was telling me:

Any event you put on could never be this good…You’re amateur hour…It takes so much work to put on a conference that it might not even be worth it…And really, who are YOU to think YOU can actually pull off a conference that people are going to buy tickets for?

And THAT’S when I snapped out of it and knew I was being fed a load of garbage.

Who am I to think I can pull off a conference?

I did pull off a conference!

The 2012 Killer Tribes Conference was amazing. We had over 125 people there and the feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. I planned it and executed it all while holding down a day job.

So THAT’s who I think I am, inner voice.

I’m someone who has already done it, you idiot!

THE CHALLENGE

You know what inner voice? You can shove it.

You almost had me for a second, but you’re so freaking dumb you that you taunted me with something that didn’t even make any sense. I can and will pull off another conference next year.

And my challenge to you today is to call BS on your inner voice, whatever it’s telling you. You might not be able to catch it in an obvious lie like I did, but chances are it’s just spitting garbage at you anyway.

What do you say?

Let’s ignore that negative, whiny inner voice and let’s dream big and work hard together. Whatever it’s trying to convince you to quit is probably the one thing you need to do. And I know you can do it!
